Archaeological Images of the Alder Creek Camp

Table 3 shows the fourteen soil layers and other deposits that make up the archaeological context of the Alder Creek site. The deposits labeled strata I and XI are geographical members of a tan brown silt-loam to fine sandy loam soil covering much of the site to a depth of twenty to thirty-five centimeters and containing a mixture of twentieth-century, nineteenth-century, and earlier artifacts. Bioturbation, mostly rodent activity, has greatly disturbed these deposits in most areas of the site. Below the top deposits are several transitional soil layers. Strata II, X, and XIV are geographical members of a light brown clay-loam to clay soil layer with orange mottling that underlies all of the other deposits at the site and contains only a few prehistoric lithic artifacts. The layer appears to be at least twenty-five thousand years old.
